A little bit about me
Hey everyone!
My name is Ryder Skaaren, and I am looking forward to learn more about you all as this semester progresses. I grew up in the small town of Hope, Alaska and am now entering my second year of college here at UAF. I like to spend my free time playing tennis and disc golf while soaking up the sun. My current goal is to graduate with a civil engineering degree to focus on the design of road systems.
Picture from my hometown
I developed a love for music at a very young age when listening to Munford and Sons with my dad. I listened to a lot of folk music when I was young and then slowly switched to mainly listening to alternative and rock music. As of recently, I listen to music in all genres and am trying to experiment with new tastes that I am not accustomed to. I never learned to play an instrument, but have always wanted to learn to play the piano. I hope to learn as much as I can this semester and continue to develop my love for music!
Here are some of my favorite songs over the years

ReplyDeletePiano is one of the best instruments to start with! I wish I stuck with it, but band took my heart with the flute. Always love having memories of music and family. Great first post!
DeleteFun! I have a friend that works with DOT as a project manager. He makes really good money, but he spends most days away from his family. Iris DeMent and Avett Brothers are really popular with the ukulele crowd for open mics.
ReplyDeleteYour dad and my mom have very similar music tastes! I also grew up listening to a lot of folk stuff and indie rock because of her.
ReplyDeleteBeing a road planner would be so cool. I've done a few trips all the way up the Dalton Highway and every time I just think to myself, "what encouraged them to build the road this way?". Also, I have a weird obsession with going on parts of Alaska highways that were overridden by reroutes, I just find it so cool!
ReplyDeleteI think folk music has a very peaceful vibe to it, but I like that you are working towards expanding your horizons in music.
That sounds like such a cool job to have! I honestly never even thought about what a civil engineering degree would entail.
ReplyDeleteI love Hope! It's one of my favorite places to travel too in the summer. It's the opposite for me I grew up on alternative and have drifted more towards folk music.
ReplyDeleteI am also in my second year at UAF! Your degree sounds so cool, too. I am also looking forward to developing more of a love for music this semester.
ReplyDeleteI have wanted to learn how to play piano too. It is such a unique instrument. I also like Mumford & Sons, and The Last Revel. Have you heard of Light in My Eyes by The Last Revel? It is a good song.
ReplyDeleteHello Ryder! There seems to be a lot of similarities between the two of us. I also grew up in Alaska and am going into my second year of college here at UAF. Not to mention the fact that I’m trying to graduate with an engineering degree as well, although I’m attempting to get a geological engineering degree instead of a civil one like you.
ReplyDeleteHi Ryder! I am also in my second year of college at UAF. Mumford & Sons is a great band and I remember listening to it with my mom. You and your dad have great taste!
