MUSIC ANALYSIS #1 "AMERICAN PIE"
"American Pie," released in 1971 by Don McLean, is a folk rock classic that captures the American culture of the 1950s and 1960s. Growing up, my dad and I would listen to this song on road trips we took together, enjoying its great storytelling, so it holds a special place in my heart.
"American Pie" primarily follows a moderate tempo in 4/4 time, which gives it a steady and flowing feel. The song combines elements of folk and rock, featuring a mix of acoustic guitar, piano, and drums that provide a consistent beat throughout the song. It starts slower and more reflective during the intro and verses, with a folk-like pace. However, the tempo picks up significantly in the chorus, giving it a more lively, rock feel. This fluctuation between slower verses and faster, energetic choruses displays innovation for its time.
Along with the tempo, the timbre is constantly changing. The vocals shift from soft in the verses to heavy throughout the chorus. The guitar gives off a light tone, while the piano provides a clear contrast. During the chorus, the drums and electric guitar add liveliness to the song.
The vocal range in the song adds a lot of emotions and helps emphasize the song's dynamic shifts between reflective and energetic moments. Don McLean’s voice moves between these notes, starting in a lower range during the verses and reaching higher, more powerful notes in the chorus.
Due to its innovative tempo and unique storytelling, there is no wonder why the single was the number-one US hit for four weeks in 1972. The song's success lead to it being one of the most memorable songs from the 1970s. This was also displayed when it entered the Grammy hall of fame in 2002.

Hello!! I really love this song. I think this was a great song to be able to research as it is very well loved. Did you know the backstory behind this song? It is about the famous singers Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper who all died in a plane crash on their way to a show. I absolutely love Ritchie Valens and this song so learning they went together was really cool to me.
